Field Trip with the kids

¡Hola a todos los padres!

I hope this post finds you well and that you are enjoying the beautiful rain. I wanted to update you on what we did this week while you were at your teacher/parent meetings. We got to enjoy Duboce Park and the Randall Museum. Our activities were a bit more playful (and crazier) than usual.

On Monday, we kicked off the week with four activities. We did two races: a three-legged one, and a cotton-on-spoon one. The kids were divided in two teams and had to answer questions regarding what we’ve seen in class in order to take turns to run. We also made garments with toilet paper (Clothes is the topic of next week), and took turns answering vocabulary questions. We ended the day with a bit of music (in Mandarin and Spanish).

On Tuesday, we had some free time, had a short “Hula hoop jam” and played Pictionary (or Pictograma). The kids took turns drawing scenes for the rest of the group to guess, i.e.: “Dos niñas bailando con hula hulas” (Two girls dancing with hula hoops), or “Una persona hablando por teléfono” (A person talking on the phone), etc.

On Wednesday, we went to the Randall Museum and saw the animals, the earthquake simulations, and part of the train exhibition. The kids had a scavenger hunt in Spanish with vocabulary that described the animals in the museum. It was difficult but they were able to get through several of the clues, some did better than their teacher who was ashamed but so proud.

Thursday was our day of R & R with free time in the playground at Duboce Park and some vocabulary/ race games. We laughed with the balloon race. The kids teamed in pairs and carried balloons with different parts of their bodies, despite the wind and the majority of the balloons bursting every minute.

I hope your children enjoyed the week as much as I did. Last but not least, I would like to thank each and every one of the fathers and mothers that volunteered and chaperoned. You are troopers! Your children and their teachers are truly thankful. :)

Have a great rest of your weekend!

*Alice will upload pictures shortly.

Happy field trip week! 愉快的课外活动周!

This past week we had a field trip every day. It was our first field trip for this school year! What a week!

First of all, I want to thank Theresa (Jackson’s mom), Karen (Rowan and Avery’s mom), Michele (Madeline’s mom), Beth (Sophia’s mom), Kim (Olav and Kaia’s mom), Jenny (Hadley and Elodie’s mom) and Brad (Baxter’s dad) for the big help, thank you for volunteering for the field trip, without your help, we wouldn’t have had so much fun on the field trip. Also for other parents, thank you for your support as well.

Some of you might have already heard from your child(ren) about the field trip. The weather last week was pretty nice. We spent most of the time at Dobuce Park. We set different group stations for each game and class. All the games are designed based on trying to have the students speak the target language while they are playing the game. we had a “Toilet paper fashion show”, “Toss bean bag”, “three legged relay race”, “hoops gift shop”, “drum style hot potato”, ‘Parachute order”, also some clay and origami handcraft game. I was so glad to see the students were laughing while playing, it was also very exciting to hear the students trying their best to speak Mandarin.

Not only that, we had a great opportunity to see, to hear, and to feel the wonderful Chinese and Asian cultures at the Asian Art Museum on Thursday. The students all showed me they have a big interest in the eastern cultures. Language is an important part of the culture. For the students to be interest in the language, which is the key for people to learn the language, they should also love the cultural background, even though it was only a 45 minutes museum trip. I believe it was a wonderful experience for them to be engaged by the different cultures from the other side of the world.

In the museum, we divided the class into two groups by age. Both of the teams were told some very interesting Chinese folktale. The older team also had a “scavenger hunt” in the museum. Each of them got a list of pictures and they had to find the objects on the list in the museum, then call them out in Mandarin. They loved the hunt very much. The museum staff, Pam and Carolyn (who were the tour guides for each team), told me that the students were such a delight and clever

For the younger group, they were not able to participate in the scavenger hunt, but I have the image list available if you’d like to take them to the museum and have a little fun playing along with them. They have a free tour every Sunday afternoon at 1PM.

Here is a picture for your enjoyment!  Alice will update with more pictures very soon.

House and food 1

Hi parents!

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend! I just wanted to fill you up on what we have been doing this past week. We mainly talked about the home, objects you can find and actions you do in each room. Some of the things the kids enjoyed the most have been the house songs (Yo tengo una casita), Go fish with house related images, and house charades a game in which the kids had to put up a mini play of a group of animals performing an action in a room of the house (ie: eagles brushing their teeth in the kitchen) for the other team to guess. We also had a group project in which we made  collages for the rooms of the house. The kids got to cut and/or draw different places in the house and the furniture in them. They set up the rooms on construction paper and labeled the objects they added to their rooms. It was a great team effort that ended in colorful happy images. The kids spoke about their own houses and the objects they have and like about the different rooms. Some of the target sentences were:

“En mi dormitorio hay una alfombra roja”. (There is a red rug in my room).

“En mi casa hay una chimenea”. (There is a chimney in my house).

Here are some pictures of the projects:

For help and practice at home, I have put together a list of household vocabulary. Feel free to print it with your child and label different rooms and the objects that go in them. Please note that some students are more advanced than others and remember some vocabulary better. There is an English list with the file. I recommend to use this as a guide but not as labels. When putting them around the house let you child read the label. If s/he cannot remember what it is, mimic the object, tell him/her the room where the object is, or leave it for last. Make it fun and playful, but try not to tell them the English word. You can click here to download the file: House vocab listFeel free to change the font, its color, or size. If your child would like to show the rest of the class what they’ve done in class, please take pictures of your home project so I can post them in this blog.

Let me know if you have any questions. Nos vemos pronto.

Last Month, we were learning about Mid-Autumn Festival (zhong qiu jie) 中秋节,is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese. The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month. Some students know about the Mid-Autumn Festival. And they love to eat a moon cake. I like to share more china culture with them. They did a good job.

In my class,We made a lantern together . After that we ate a moon cake. But some students can not to eat a moon cake. Next time, i will tell the parent know when we need to bring own snacks for your kid.

Mid-Autumn Fesitval in Mandarin Class 我们的中秋节 :)

One of the most important Chinese festivals on the Chinese calendar is the Mid-Autumn Festival. Its also called Moon festival. In Chinese, it’s called “zhong qiu jie”. Our ancestors placed the seventh, eighth, and ninth lunar months in the Autumn season. The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.

To celebrate the fullest moon of the year, we have many beautiful folktales. It is not the first time for the students who were in my class last year, and I‘m so happy to see the new students express big interest in the Chinese culture.

We read the most famous story about Mid-Autumn Festival, called “chang er beng yue”. Here is the story, you can read it if you’re interest.

After the story telling, they all made very nice cards based on the story.
You can see the cards they created in the picture bellow. I had them bring it home so you can ask your child to show you their beautiful work.
