i-Immersion is pleased to partner with the McKinley After-School Language Program (MALIP) to provide Spanish and Mandarin classes to students and families of McKinley Elementary School! The MALIP program was started in August of 2009 by two incoming Kindergarten parents with strong support and encouragement from the school principal, Rosa Fong. The parents and faculty of McKinley, in conjunction with the i-Immersion team, strive to develop more structured lessons toward skill-building for the students.
Goals and Expectations
- Commit to an affordable program for developing proficiency in the Mandarin and Spanish language and literacy within the McKinley community.
- Reinforce McKinley’s historical dedication to developing intellectual curiosity, cultural awareness, and linguistic capability.
- Ensure that students learn practical, functional language that they can use in communicating with individuals from different cultures
- Engage students in the language learning process by providing age-appropriate lessons and activities.
The Teaching Methods
Foreign language classes in the MALIP program will be conducted using the following key aspects of proven techniques:
- Exploring and Discovery Approach (EDA)- helps students acquire foreign language in natural and age-appropriate ways.
- Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS)- integrates gestures and creative embellishment of stories to engage students.
- Multiple Intelligences- ensures students are exposed to diversified content that are suited to their individual learning styles.
- The i-Immersion Activity Blocks
The i-Immersion Activity Blocks
i-Immersion’s afterschool program provides students with a full immersion environment where active language play and instruction is conducted daily. The program offers children in kindergarten through the fifth grade a rich and varied schedule, which balances routine with new events and activities to keep kids engaged in their language learning. Students in the afterschool program are guided towards target language fluency through what we called Activity Blocks.
